The Lonely St. Patrick's Day Sock For the last two weeks, I've been concentrating on trying to knit a pair of festive socks to wear on my favorite holiday of all, St. Patrick's Day.  Unfortunately, after these two weeks, I have yet to finish the first sock.  Normally I am not this slow a knitter.  I've been able to crank out a pair of socks in two weeks.  For example, I managed this when hurrying to finish the gift I had made for my father-in-law prior to the birth of my daughter. It's not the sock's fault that I haven't been able to finish it yet.  Nor is it the yarn.  The yarn is beautiful and I have been nothing but excited to work on this project.  In fact, all I've dreamed about for this holiday is being able to run around in two  matching St. Paddy's Day socks.  No, instead there are two things I am blaming for this.  The first is just not feeling like I've been able to get virtually any knitting time in.  Between the cra...
My name is Rachel and I am a sock knitter. Though it's amazing to me that I know how to knit at all. Reading through some blogs, watching podcasts and perusing thru the Ravelry forums, it seems like my knitting story is similar to so many others.  I've noticed that many people mention that they were first taught how to knit as a child by an older family member, but it didn't seem to stick and they abandoned it until college or a bit later.  My first knitting memory is of five year old me sitting in my grandmother's wooden rocking chair, playing with her knitting needles.  I recall my grandmother patiently trying to teach me a knit stitch over and over again, but I didn't seem to get it.  Instead, I remember wrapping the blue yarn over the needle until it was wound around the thing like string on a yo-yo.  If you've ever seen the funny Youtube video,  Knitting 101 - YouTube , you can easily picture what my first knitting experience looked like. My sec...

Hello Again Blogging World!!!

Well hello there, Blogging world! It's been quite some time since we've last seen each other, and it's so good to be back.  My name is Rachel and some of you, if you were one of the lucky fifteen followers, may remember my very short-lived attempt at this back in 2010.  I've grown up since then.  Hopefully matured a bit, and developed some new interests to share with all of you.  This blog will focus on three them: knitting, spinning, and motherhood, though not necessarily in that order. Why am I doing this?  When I tried my hand at blogging the first time, I was a humble grad school student who thought that it was trendy and might look good on my resume.  Now I've decided to take this seriously,  without any ulterior motive.  Instead, I'm hoping to use this to document my journey into exploring the world around me and to be able to reflect on all that I see and learn, especially in the world of knitting and spinning. Why would you want to re...
